The main objective of some foreign forcesโ unwelcomed meddling in Ethiopiaโs internal affairs is to return the country to the pre-2018 status quo that they have enjoyed uncontested leverage and influence.
Political Science and International Studies Assistant Professor at Bahir Dar University Yayew Genet toldย The Ethiopian Heraldย that some global actorsโ intensified attempts to dictate Ethiopiaโs domestic affairs emanate from their desire to control the countryโs political economy and maintain dominance.
As East Africa is a strategic location for world politics, the old superpowers want to maintain their control and block the emerging powers from accessing the region, the academician elaborated.
โNow Ethiopia is executing wide-scale reforms and correcting injustice and other bad legacies of the previous regime,โ he said, adding that some Western nations have made a surprise move in exerting unwarranted interferences and trying to thwart national reform. It is evident that developing countries under pressure from First World cannot pursue developmental policies by their own.
Yayew further stated that post-2018 Ethiopia has faced similar challenge with other developing nations that have made attempts to assert themselves in international arenas. โThe peace and stability of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria and other countries were undermined by their refusal to Western hegemony.โ
The unjustified pressure against the current Ethiopian government is also driven by itsย principled stance in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) talks and the commitment to ensure the benefits of Ethiopians from the mega dam, he noted.
