(Walta) โ United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the world to work together to โsuppress the global terrorist threat in Afghanistanโ after the Taliban took control of the war-torn country.
โThe international community must unite to make sure that Afghanistan is never again used as a platform or safe haven for terrorist organizations,โ Guterres told an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.
The meeting was hastily convened at the UNโs headquarters in New York after Taliban militants entered the capital Kabul on Sunday, leading Afghan president Ashraf Ghani to flee abroad.
โI appeal to the Security Council and the international community as a whole to stand together, to work together and act together,โ Guterres added.
He urged nations to โuse all tools at its disposal to suppress the global terrorist threat in Afghanistan and to guarantee that basic human rights will be respected.โ
Guterresโ comments came as Taliban fighters patrolled Kabul after a stunningly swift end to Afghanistanโs 20-year war.
Guterres said Afghans โdeserve our full support.โ
โThe following days will be pivotal,โ he said. โThe world is watching. We cannot and must not abandon the people of Afghanistan.โ
The secretary-general urged the international community to โspeak with one voice to uphold human rights in Afghanistan.โ
He said it was โessential that the hard-won rights of Afghan women and girls are protected.โ
Guterres also called upon the Taliban โto respect and protect international humanitarian law and the rights and freedoms of all persons.โ
However, the secretary general failed to call a spade spade in Ethiopiaโs case related the destructive role of Tigray Peopleโs Liberation Front (TPLF), a group designated by Ethiopian House of People Representativesย recently, long after the US called it terrorist in 1976. One can refer the global terrorism database to verify it.ย That shows how the global body tail wag issues when the desire of its powerful member has concern about a given global development behind the scene. The Afghan case being a case in point. That is hypocrisy at its best.
