Responding to queries raised from member of the parliament regarding nationโs diplomatic efforts, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), stated that Ethiopia aims to cooperate with all nations based on the principle of mutual giving and receiving.
The Prime Minister underscored, โAs Africaโs power center, Ethiopia is dedicated to the continentโs development beyond its own interests. We will pursue our national interests while engaging with all sides.โ
โEthiopia doesnโt want to pose a threat to any nation; rather it will continue enhancing its role in addressing continental problems,โ he noted.
Prime Minister Abiy pointed out that some internal elements that are working with external forces to destabilize peace and disrupt ongoing development activities, calling them to embrace the call made by the government for peaceful solutions.
The Prime Minister of Ethiopia emphasized the countryโs commitment to strengthening its relationships with nations across the globe, guided by its national interests. He pointed to Ethiopiaโs membership in the BRICS group as a vital opportunity for enhancing economic cooperation with fellow member countries.
The Prime Minister reiterated Ethiopiaโs firm belief in the importance of gaining peaceful access to the sea, particularly to the Red Sea, affirming that the countryโs approach aims to avoid conflict with neighboring nations. He stated that Ethiopia is focused on promoting peace and accelerating development while prioritizing regional cooperation and attracting foreign investment.
โBy signing a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland for a 50-year lease to access the Red Sea, we are not infringing on Somaliaโs territory. Ethiopia is home to the largest Somali community outside of Somalia. We have made significant sacrifices, including the loss of thousands, to help maintain peace in Somalia,โ the Premier stated.
Regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), he described it as a significant opportunity for both Sudan and Egypt. He noted that the saddle dam has been completed and expressed confidence that there are no issues concerning downstream countries. The Prime Minister pledged that Ethiopia would release water to Sudan and Egypt in the event of shortages, asserting that Ethiopia will not allow any threats to its sovereignty.
